We Share a Dream
A bold new vision is emerging for Gippsland, one that could help secure the future of Australia’s most genetically significant koala population while creating a world-class conservation, education, and tourism destination in Yarram.
The proposed Yarram Koala Sanctuary will bring together wildlife care, conservation science, First Nations knowledge, community pride, and immersive visitor experiences in one extraordinary project dedicated to protecting the iconic Strzelecki Koala and our other native fauna.

Location
The habitat of the Strzelecki Koala spans the south Gippsland region, primarily the southern Strzelecki Ranges.
Locating the Yarram Koala Sanctuary near Alberton West State Forest and the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges places it at the heart of a region that supports significant wildlife populations while facing constant pressures which include habitat loss, road trauma, bushfire, and disease.
A dedicated local facility would provide timely care for koalas and other native species, reducing transport stress and improving rehabilitation outcomes.
Critically, its scope extends beyond koalas to serve the full breadth of the region’s remarkable biodiversity: arboreal, migratory, and status-sensitive fauna alongside macropods, birds, and reptiles, all impacted by habitat loss, urbanisation, and trauma in one of Australia’s most biodiverse regions.
Our Objectives
Rescue / Recovery
To preserve and grow the Strzelecki Koala as a keystone population to support stronger genetic diversity of Koalas throughout Australia.
Research
To create a centre of excellence which builds knowledge, drives aspirational and innovative thinking, and defines future planning in the conservation of Strzelecki Koalas.
Education
Storytelling to educate and engage people, provide mentoring programs, and career pathways.
Sustainability
To deliver practical and long-term outcomes and build capacity that lasts beyond the lifespan of our investment.
Tourism
To establish a year-round destination which provides social and economic benefits to the region.
